THE JEWELRY CODE:
Data as Wearable Art
DataArt is an increasing in popularity art form that uses data as source material for creating works of art. It not only makes data comprehensible but also imbues it with emotional resonance, turning it from mathematics into a powerful, creative tool for interpretation, exploration, and reflection of reality – both global, personal, and universally shared across cultures.

We invite you to create a wearable object – a piece of jewelry – that merges data and art. Let your piece tell a story through material, structure, form, size, geometry, texture, or color that push the boundaries of traditional jewelry design.
Syldyr project invites you to join our jewelry challenge!
What should you do to participate?
In anticipation of our exhibition in The National Museum of Kazakhstan (that you can still be a part of, see our page for the open call info) we are launching a challenge - let’s make jewelry together, share our research and creation process, support each other - and then you will be able to apply to our open call with the piece you will create as a result of the challenge.⠀
Decide how you will visualize the data on your wearable piece. With color (i.e. blue stones - days without coffee, red stones - days of double espresso), with size (i.e. different sizes of pendants represent gender pay gap in different countries), with reference to graphs or charts (i.e. the shape of the bracelet imitates the spikes of the graph that shows ocean pollution levels through the years) or something completely different? The more creative you get the better of course! ⠀

Share each step of your way on social media, tag @syldyr_project and add hashtag #DataArtChallengeSyldyr.
Stories or posts - doesn’t matter (but please make sure that your page is public for us to see).
We want to see everything - your process of choosing or collecting data, picking the right materials, assembling - everything!⠀

If you want to join our Challenge’s Whatsapp group, send us a DM to be included. And if you have any questions - hit us up too! ⠀
Let’s do Data Art jewelry - in our Post Truth era the trusted statistical data is one of the last resorts of common sense, so let’s spread it around with the help of our favorite medium.⠀

Decide on what data you want to use for your piece.
Is it your personal data about how much coffee you consume this year? Or is it statistical data from a trusted source about some global issues - climate change, gender inequality etc? All options are fine by us!
To help you better understand the conditions of our Open Call, we would like to present examples of DataArt jewelry.
6 out of 100
A neckpiece that is made of 100 pieces of broken heel parts and used Swarovski crystals to represent gender inequality. Only 6 of them have a crystal embedded in the centre. It represents the fact that there were only six female CEOs among the top 100 UK companies in 2019. The broken heels without a crystal represent women who were not promoted - something which may not have happened if they were men.

Collaboration project with Swarovski and Central Saint Martins BA Jewellery Design.

Material: Recycled heel parts, crystals and brass

Model: Smaranda Voican

Year of production: 2019

Your work could be inspired by:
We do not limit you in your choice of materials, techniques, or themes.
  • Personal data: rhythms of your life, step counts, financial expenses, emotional states, even your caffeine intake – anything in your life you can collect the data on, transforming it into meaningful insights, or thought-provoking visual narratives.
  • Social topics: from human rights statistics to analyses of global social changes and inspiring meaningful actions.
  • Global issues: such as climate change, ecological crises, or the impact of technology, influencing societies worldwide.
In case your work is based on existing data, we are asking you to use statistics from reliable sources – credible, verified, and authoritative data repositories. We will also ask you to attach the link to these sources when presenting and explaining.
Tell your story through data and make the invisible visible!
